![]() Basic Finger Print Powder with Brush and Lifting Tape:
Regular Fingerprint Powder works best on smooth and non-tacky surfaces. Step One: Identify the area being used to pick up latent print Latent Print: prints that are not visible to the naked eye Step Two: Take a Fiber duster and dip lightly into the regular fingerprint powder. The powders may come in several different colors. Pick a color that is appropriate for the surface and can easily help you see it. Do NOT use the same brush for the colors, use one brush per color. Step Three: Start to apply the powder to the surface by slowly and lightly twirling the brush over the area. Carefully brush off extra powder from the print with either a gentle back and forth motion or twirling. Step Four: Take a small piece of lifting tape (make sure not to touch the sticky side). Press the tape onto the surface with the print. Step Five: Gently and slowly lift the tape from the surface. Place the lifted print onto a contrasting surface to the color used to lift. For example: If you use black powder, place the print on a white surface. Step Six: Properly fill out print card ![]() Magnetic Powder, Applicator, and Lifting Tape:
Magnetic Powder works best on rough and porous surfaces. Step One: Identify the area used to pick up the latent print Step Two: Take a magnetic applicator. This applicator appears like a pen. It has a plastic outer shell, while the inside hold a magnet for releasing the magnetic powder after use. Step Three: Make sure magnet is all the way in the plastic shell and dip into magnetic powder. Step Four: Remove extra powder by tapping lighting on the powder jar. The powder should form a a small brush at the tip of outer shell. Step Five: Gently brush print without letting the plastic shell touch the fingerprint. Step Six: After finished using brush, hold it over powder jar and slide the magnet out of the plastic shell. This will release the extra powder into the jar and keep the applicator clean. Step Seven: Go over print with applicator to pick up remaining powder and once again release extra powder into jar. Step Eight: Take a small piece of lifting tape, without touching the sticky area and press onto the surface with the print. Step Nine: Slowly and gently lift tape from the surface and place on contrasting color background card. Step Ten: Fill out print card. ![]() Cyanoacrylate (Superglue Fuming):
Superglue fuming works by adhering to the amino acids, fatty acids and proteins in fingerprints. Step One: Identify object that will be used for this method Step Two: Make sure you have all materials needed like; superglue, small aluminum containers, a candle warmer, and a tightly seal able container. Step Three: Place a few drops of superglue into an aluminum container, about the size of a nickle. Step Four: Place water into another aluminum container. Step Five: Place object being printed, and both the containers with water and super glue into the chamber. Make sure that the superglue and water containers are on the candle warmer. Step Six: Close the chamber tightly and do not inhale any fumes coming from the chamber Step Seven: Leave object in chamber until white film starts to develop on the print You should be able to see ridges. Step Eight: Take out object and develop print by using a powder method and finishing off with proper lifting. Step Nine: Properly fill in print card. Iodine Fuming:
Iodine Fuming works best on porous surfaces like paper Step One: Identify object that you wish to get print from Step Two: Take object and place into a seal able bag. Step Three: Take a 1/2 teaspoon of iodine crystals in the bag along with the object Step Four: Seal the bag Step Five: Wait 15 minutes for print to fully develop Step Six: Photograph print Step Seven: Properly fill out print card and attach to photographed print ![]() Ninhydrin:
Ninhydrin works best on porous surfaces Step one: Identify object that you wish to print Step Two: Wear protective gear such as gloves, apron, and goggles. Step Three: Make sure you are in a place of low traffic and with open windows and doors. Step Four: Spay object with ninhydrin spray. Step Five: Let print slowly appear. It will appear as a purple color. Step Six: Take tape and cover the print to perserve it if it is paper. If it is not paper use a lifting method. Step Seven: Properly fill out a print card and attach to the the printed object if it is paper or attach to lifted print. |
